A Warm Welcome to
Bristol Empire Dragons

Who We Are?

It’s a Lifestyle

Our club was founded in 2001 and was originally sponsored by the Empire Sports Club, hence the name Bristol Empire Dragons. The club was originally based at Ariel Rowing Club, St Anne’s before moving to Saltford Rowing Club in 2014. We remain BED but would also reference Bristol and Bath as our home cities, as Saltford is equidistant between the two. We are based on the River Avon, just on the outskirts of Saltford at The Rowing Centre. The postcode is BS31 3JN. There is plenty of space for parking outside our boathouse and we have use of the rowing centre changing and toilet facilities.

The club has a boat house alongside the Rowing Club where we house a range of boats ranging from kayaks to 20-person dragon boats. There are dragon boating clubs throughout the UK and racing events are held during each year. The club race in the National League. The National Dragon Boat Championships are held each year at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham.

Fitness for all levels of ability and age.

Absolute Beginners to World Champions

We currently have 3 simple objectives as a club:

  1. Have Fun – We are an Amateur Sports Club that competes in the National Race Series. We train and race hard but our number 1 priority is to have fun and enjoy ourselves.

  2. Commitment – We are a small club and rely on paddlers to commit to train as often as their schedules permit. We will always make exercise fun but we want all paddlers to commit to train and race as hard as their personal limitations.

  3. Recruitment – We are actively seeking new recruits so we need our members to be our voice for promoting and raising awareness of our small club. We allow new members to come and try for a few sessions before signing up as a paying member.

Almost ANYONE can participate in this sport. We simply ask you to wear club supplied buoyany aids, if you are a non swimmer. Our youngest members are in their teens and eldest are pensioners. They can all share a seat on boat and bring along the children who can either enjoy the ride or bang the drums!!
