Join Bristol Empire Dragons
Dragon boat racing for everyone — beginners, families, fitness lovers, and competitive athletes. Based between Bristol and Bath on the River Avon.
Why join Bristol Empire Dragons?
Have fun on the water
Dragon boat racing is one of the most sociable sports you can try. Whether you are racing at national events or just enjoying a Sunday morning paddle on the River Avon, there is always something to smile about.
Get fit — whole body workout
Paddling works your core, arms, shoulders, and back simultaneously. It is low-impact, high-reward, and suitable for all fitness levels. Many members say it is the best workout they have ever enjoyed.
Be part of a real community
Our club is built on friendship. Outside of training we meet for BBQs, pub nights, paddles around Bristol Harbourside, and an annual Christmas party. Families are always welcome.
Compete at national and international level
If you want to race, we compete in the BDA National Race Series and the National Dragon Boat Championships. Several of our members have represented Great Britain internationally — including at the Club Crew World Championships.
Is dragon boat racing for me?
Almost anyone can join a dragon boat team. You do not need to be sporty, young, or experienced. Here is who is already in our club:
-
Complete beginners who have never paddled before
-
Families with children from their teens upwards
-
Senior citizens and pensioners
-
People who cannot swim (buoyancy aids are always provided)
-
National-level athletes and GB squad members
-
People looking to get fit in a fun and social way
-
Anyone who wants to try something completely different
Your safety comes first
Every paddler wears a club-provided buoyancy aid (life jacket) at every session — mandatory in the winter season and optional in the summer. Our coaches and helms are BDA-qualified and experienced. Non-swimmers are fully welcome — no exceptions.
How to join — 3 simple steps
Step 1: Come to a free trial session
You need to book in advance. Simply turn up at Saltford Rowing Centre (BS31 3JN) at the start of any training session: Tuesdays & Thursdays: 6:30pm Sundays: 9:00am We will meet you, fit you with a buoyancy aid, and get you on the water. Your first few sessions are completely free. No commitment, no pressure.
Step 2: Set up your monthly membership
Club membership is £20 per month. This covers your club insurance, BDA registration, boat maintenance, and all equipment used at training. Payment is by standing order — a committee member will give you the bank details. You can set it up online in under two minutes.
Step 3: Register with the BDA (free)
if you want to take part in the races. Once you decide to join, create a free account on the BDA membership website at bda.justgo.com and assign yourself to Bristol Empire Dragons. This is our official club database. Let James or Lee know when you have done this so we can add you to our WhatsApp and Teamer groups. If you want to race in the National Race Series, a £35 annual BDA membership is also required — this covers your race insurance.
